“Phi Ta Khon” Festival
“Phi Ta Khon” is a tradition/festival of mask arts reflecting the local beliefs and way of life of Loei province. It is a local play in the Buddhist merit-making event “Boon Luang” or “Boon Phra Wate”.  It is assumed that the story of Phi Ta Khon derived from the story of Maha Wetsandon Chadok (stories of the former incarnations of the Lord Buddha). In the story, Phra Wetsandon and his wife were returning home after their extended stay in the forest, so the villagers and animals paraded to send them back. The forest spirits hid themselves among the crowds for their last farewell to Phra Wetsandon and his family. For this reason, the tradition is called “Phi Tam Khon” (spirits following humans) and the sound is distorted later to “Phi Ta Khon”.
In the “Phi Ta Khon” festival, the villagers decorate the coir masks by drawing scary ghosts on them but with colorful colors. They wear the bamboo earthen streamer on the head with buffalo bell to make the tinkling sound while walking. The festival is believed to be for worshiping the ancestor’s spirits, as well as, to worship and please the “Phraya Tan” (God) so that the rain will fall, and the land will be fertile.
